The union of my grandparents was intended to carry on the family lineage, yet, as their only descendant, I have found solace and love in the embrace of men.

Hair Pin
(Probably made in late Qin Dynasty)
Hairpins, delicate symbols of grace and femininity, have long been associated with traditional expectations for women and their designated roles.
Years ago, he inherited his great-grandmother's hairpin, which held a special significance. With his long hair flowing, he bore a striking resemblance to the woman captured in old shrine photographs. It felt as though her spirit lingered, bridging the gap between generations and establishing a deep family connection.
Great-grandmother entered the family as a concubine during the late Qing Dynasty. Her purpose was to give birth as the first wife couldn't bear children, ensuring that the family lineage would continue uninterrupted.
However, fate had other plans. There were more daughters than sons in the family, deviating from the expected path. As the fourth generation arrived, he remained the sole male heir, carrying the weight of ancestral hopes and expectations. The elders made it clear that marriage and having children were essential to fulfill the family's wishes.
Yet, deep within his heart, a different longing stirred. It was a desire that went against societal norms, defying the expected script. His heart yearned for love with someone of the same sex.
Throughout history, people have been constrained by societal stereotypes and limitations. But the yearning for freedom, the desire to break free from others' judgement, and embrace one's true self persist. It can be seen in great-grandmother's defiance of foot binding, and in his rebellion when he grew out his hair after finishing high school, a symbolic act of liberation from the constraints that once held him back.
In the movie "Cloud Atlas" from 2012, a powerful message was conveyed: "No individual is spared by history's tread." In an ever-changing world, we strive to create lives where our hearts can flourish. We seek a path that aligns with our deepest desires, even in the face of uncertainty and challenges. It is in this pursuit that we find our true selves and the fulfillment we long for.

The designer discerns the profound significance of Granny's hairpin as a symbolic representation of self-actualization for its present possessor—the Great-grandson. Despite the hundred-year gap between this inter-generational bond, they share a similar appearance and the societal constraints imposed upon them.
The designer recalls that every time an object is replicated through molding, it acquires slightly different characteristics from the original. This reminds him of a message from a movie: "No individual has ever escaped history and reincarnation." Consequently, he contemplates whether individuals, even when confronted with parallel destinies, might ultimately converge upon vastly disparate outcomes.
Therefore, the designer invite the owner, who also works in the design field, to create a silverware flower inspired by the hairpin and connect it with the replicated hairpin flower as a ring. Through this act, they seek to fulfill the unfinished calling of the previous generation and break free from conservative constraints. Granny, the original owner of the hairpin, once searched for a hint of autonomy within her era. Her great-grandson carries the expectations of continuing the family lineage, but he chooses to follow his heart and believes that he should define his own life.
