"Their family memories are like Russian dolls. Each box holds an era."
The team visited Fai Kee Fast Food Shop several times to talk with the elder brother, Mr. Lam Leung Chung (Lam). During the talk, pass-by customers often said, “Fai Kee, the same as before!”. Once thought Fai Kee is the name of Lam, but it turned out that his father was the real Fai Kee. The predecessor of Fai Kee Fast Food was the Fai Chun Cargo Company founded by the real Fai Kee. Fai Chun Cargo Company was very well-known in the previous generation of Tai Kok Tsui residents, everyone in the community knew each other at that time.
Lam recalled that a very long time ago on one of his father's birthdays, he ordered a tailor-made container truck model with the scale of 1:100 from a model shop as a gift to his father. Fai Kee never forgot the prosperous days of freight transportation, and the model trucks had a great significance to him.
Lam and his family were fishermen living on a fishing boat in his childhood. Later, they moved ashore to Cherry Mansion in Tai Kok Tsui and started their life on land. After graduation, Lam helped with the family business and took care of his seven siblings. He didn't have any complaints, he saw it as a natural thing to do. The most important thing for family relationships is to spend time together.
The artwork presents the family's memories wrapped in layers, using the concept of Russian dolls to carry the family's historical story. Each box represents an era: Fai Kee Fast Food Shop is the outermost box that carries them; when the outer box is opened, the middle box is a container truck that run through their family memories; and the innermost box is a small fishing boat, which is either rocking or riding the waves of the sea.
